CROWN IMPERIAL
Dallas Wind Symphony
Jerry Junkin, conductor
Mary Preston, organ
Festive Music for Organ, Winds, Brass & Percussion!
One of RR’s all-time bestsellers, and an audiophile touchstone, is Pomp & Pipes!, our first foray into the magnificent repertoire for organ and wind band. In the fourteen years since, we’ve had many requests for “more!”, and here it is, a program that’s at least as exhilarating.
This time, in addition to the renowned Dallas Wind Symphony and its music director Jerry Junkin, we have the services of Mary Preston, resident organist of the mighty Fisk concert instrument in the Meyerson Symphony Center. No one knows better than she the capabilities of the Fisk, and Mary Preston can make it sing and shout.
In addition to the royal coronation anthem CROWN IMPERIAL by William Walton, there are substantial pieces that are seldom heard in such full instrumentation. Richard Strauss contributes a stately FESTIVAL INTRADA; there’s a CANZON originally composed “in stereo” by Giovanni Gabrieli; a ceremonial brass FANFARE by Henri Tomasi; an unusual arrangement by Percy Grainger of the famous COUNTY DERRY AIR; ELSA’S PROCESSION TO THE CATHEDRAL from Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, who knew how to bring an audience to its feet; KAMMERMUSIK #7, a full concerto for organ and winds by Paul Hindemith; and NIAGARA FALLS, a rousing, wild ride by popular American composer Michael Daugherty.

Opus 100 A Copland Portrait
|
| Performer: Wayne Marshall & Dallas Symphony |
Label: Delos |

Now the dynamic Litton/Dallas present a profile of the quintessential American composer Aaron Copland, representing three aspects of his music. The delightful Music for the Theatre, written by the young Copland in the 1920s, bows to the American jazz idiom that was newly thriving in the 1920s era. Not only does the music incorporate jazz ideas, but its instrumentation emulates a jazz band in sound and size.
Copland had total artistic freedom "where music should take over to express the emotions of the characters" as he wrote his score for The Red Pony, a 1949 film about a California ranch boy whose father gives him a pony. Annotator Laurie Shulman comments that "Copland followed the same instincts that served him so well for his American ballets. The music is in his 'folk-song' style, yet all of the themes are original, a fact of which is was very proud."
In his Organ Symphony, Copland commented to his biographer Vivian Perlis, "you hear rhythms that would not have been there if I had not been born and raised in Brooklyn." This is also the symphony that provoked the famous comment from Walter Damrosch - after its premiere in 1925: "...if a gifted young man can write a symphony like this at 23, within five years he will be ready to commit murder!" The famed Nadia Boulanger, who played the organ for the same premiere, found that "the work is so brilliant, so full of music..."
The stunning sonic and musical qualities of Copland's Organ Symphony are enhanced by the participation of internationally-known British organist Wayne Marshall, who has worked with Maestro Litton on both sides of the Atlantic. Marshall has been featured as solo organist or solo pianist in London's prestigious Prom concerts, with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic and many others.

Opus 100 Organ Improvisations
|
| Performer: Wayne Marshall |
Label: Delos |
| Catalog #: DE-3228 |

Internationally-known British organist Wayne Marshall has an exceptionally varied and wide-ranging career. Organist-in-residence at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, he has been featured as solo organist or solo pianist (and sometimes in both capacities) in London's prestigious Prom concerts, with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Dallas Symphony, to name just a few.
Mr. Marshall, along with his many talents, has emerged as one of the few organ improvisationists around. This new CD focuses on Mr. Marshall's amazing ability to improvise on any piece of music (he doesn't just perform works for organ or piano), and, as an added interest, the improvisations are of music usually associated with the Jazz genre. It is obvious that Mr. Marshall thoroughly understands just what Gershwin, as an example, was about, for his recent focus in his career has been the study of the correspondence between the jazz and classical piano traditions. Combine this intimate understanding of the music with brilliant technical mastery of the organ, and you have an exciting, unique experience not to be missed by any fan of either classical or jazz music.
George Gershwin: I Got Rhythm; Someone to Watch Over Me; I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise; Bess, You is My Woman Now; I Loves You, Porgy; I Got Plenty of Nuttin'
Jules Styne: Let it Snow
Billy Strayhorn: Take the A-Train
Vincent Youmans: Tea for Two
Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story Medley (includes: Tonight, America, Maria)
